National Bank of Serbia reports 4,513 counterfeit banknotes detected in 2025 with EUR notes and RSD 2,000 denomination most prevalent

The National Bank of Serbia published its Cash Operations Division report on counterfeit cash detected in January–December 2025, covering both domestic currency and effective foreign currency submitted for expert examination on suspicion of counterfeiting. The report records 1,832 counterfeit Serbian dinar (RSD) banknotes and 2,681 counterfeit foreign-currency banknotes, with euro counterfeits forming the largest share of total detections. Within counterfeit RSD banknotes, the RSD 2,000 denomination dominated by volume at 78.77% (1,443 pieces), followed by RSD 500 at 9.06% (166 pieces) and RSD 1,000 at 7.42% (136 pieces), with these three together accounting for 95.25% of detected counterfeit dinar notes. By nominal value, counterfeit RSD 2,000 notes accounted for 82.67% and RSD 5,000 notes for 11.03% of the detected counterfeit dinar value, with 2.58 counterfeit dinar notes detected per million original banknotes in circulation and RSD 5,743.36 of counterfeit money detected per billion dinars in circulation. For foreign currency, 2,196 counterfeit EUR banknotes were detected, mostly in EUR 100 and EUR 200 denominations, alongside 484 counterfeit USD banknotes concentrated in USD 100 (442 pieces) and one counterfeit DEM 100 banknote; overall, the total nominal dinar equivalent of all detected counterfeits was RSD 47,310,853.24, of which EUR represented 82.79%. The report also notes that of 510 EUR coins examined, 36 counterfeit EUR 2 coins were identified.
