The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published a letter from Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, joined by Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, urging Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis to stop production of the planned 250th anniversary 24-karat Trump gold coin. The senators also called for a public supply chain audit and a briefing on efforts to address concerns that the Mint could be using illegally procured or cartel-linked gold. The request follows an April 2026 New York Times investigation that traced gold labeled as American by the U.S. Mint to foreign sources, including pawn shops in Peru and Mexico and mines in Colombia controlled by Clan del Golfo, a drug trafficking organization sanctioned by the United States since 2013 and charged with human rights abuses. Warren and Wyden wrote that millions of dollars in foreign gold have entered the Mint's supply chain in recent years, raising the possibility that the coin could be produced using gold linked to criminal organizations. The letter asks for written responses and urges Treasury and the Mint to halt production, conduct the public audit, and provide the requested briefing by June 18, 2026.
