The Economic Sentiment Index, which combines business and consumer sentiment, also declined by 0.7 points to 96.8. The aggregate deterioration was driven by non-manufacturing, while manufacturing held up in current conditions but softened in the outlook. Manufacturing CBSI rose 0.4 points to 101.2, but its next-month outlook fell 2.1 points to 98.2. Non-manufacturing CBSI fell 2.1 points to 95.4, with the outlook down 2.7 points to 93.2. Within the detailed indicators, non-manufacturing sales and profitability weakened, while manufacturing production was flat and new orders edged up. The cyclical component of the ESI was unchanged at 95.1.
