The International Monetary Fund has appointed Silvana Tenreyro as Economic Counsellor and director of its Research Department, making the London School of Economics professor the Fund’s next chief economist. She will succeed Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who recently returned to academia. Tenreyro brings both academic and policy experience to the role. She has served on the London School of Economics faculty since 2004 and was an external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023. Earlier roles included economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Mauritius. She is also currently part of the IMF managing director’s External Advisory Group. She will assume the role on Aug. 10, 2026.
