The Alberta Securities Commission has concluded a settlement with Calgary resident Colton Kenneth Smith for insider trading in shares of i3 Energy plc. Smith agreed to pay CAD 65,000, including costs, and accept a five-year prohibition on trading or purchasing securities and derivatives, subject to limited exceptions. Smith bought the shares after a former colleague at i3 Energy Canada Ltd. disclosed material, non-public information about an ongoing sale process. Following the public announcement of i3 Energy’s acquisition on Aug. 19, 2024, Smith’s potential profit was approximately CAD 29,633. He later received cash and shares in the acquiring company when the transaction closed in November 2024.
