The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren’s Senate floor remarks ahead of the final Senate vote on the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. In the speech, Warren described the bipartisan, bicameral package as the largest housing bill in more than 30 years and said it would increase housing supply, reduce housing costs, use federal support to encourage communities to build more housing and repair existing stock, and, for the first time, stop private equity from buying single-family homes. Warren framed the bill as a response to a national shortage of millions of homes, sharply higher home prices, rental affordability pressures and private equity activity in the housing market. The release also notes that Warren and Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott, together with House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill and Ranking Member Maxine Waters, had previously released the final bipartisan, bicameral agreement on the legislative package. The remarks were delivered before the final Senate vote. No vote outcome was included in the release.
