The Financial Action Task Force of Latin America (GAFILAT) held a regional exercise in Lima, Peru to strengthen operational capacity and cooperation among member countries to detect and prevent the illicit cross-border movement of cash and other values. The initiative ran in two phases, starting with an on-site visit to Jorge Chávez International Airport to observe control systems, registration procedures and databases linked to declarations of cross-border transportation of currency and bearer negotiable instruments (TTD). A subsequent training session covered applicable international standards, results from prior monitoring exercises, and progress on the TTD-SISTRAC Network, including its functionalities, regional data and development outlook. Guatemala and Chile presented how they use SISTRAC-generated information, while Panama, Costa Rica and Peru shared practical cases from border controls; the exercise also identified strengths and areas for improvement in national systems.
