The Financial Action Task Force of Latin America reported that participants in its July 15-16 special session on environmental crime identified stronger financial investigations and closer public-private cooperation as key to combating illicit financial flows linked to illegal mining and illegal logging and timber trafficking. The session examined these crimes from an anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing perspective. Financial intelligence units, specialist prosecutors, investigative authorities, international organizations and private-sector representatives reviewed money laundering typologies, red flags and investigative practices. The conclusions and recommendations will inform future regional initiatives, with an emphasis on coordination among competent authorities and improved detection, reporting and investigation of related illicit financial flows.
