The Bank of the Republic of Burundi held a training workshop on integrating Burundi’s real-time gross settlement system with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa’s Regional Payment and Settlement System (REPSS). The workshop also covered the Digital Regional Payment Platform (DRPP) and involved staff from commercial banks, the National Post Office and the central bank. REPSS is designed to reduce the cost, time and intermediary-bank requirements associated with regional trade payments. The DRPP is intended to support instant, secure and affordable cross-border digital payments, including settlement in local currencies. The training forms part of Burundi’s work to connect its payment system with COMESA infrastructure, expand regional market access and improve payment services for financial institutions and businesses.
