The Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities published an update from the Joint Forum of Financial Market Regulators following its annual meeting in Calgary, where members discussed emerging artificial intelligence (AI) systems and economic relations. The meeting brought together representatives from the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), CAPSA, the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations and the Mortgage Brokers’ Council of Canada. A plenary session covered the CSA’s recently published Staff Notice and Consultation 11-348 on the applicability of Canadian securities laws to the use of AI systems in capital markets, including feedback sought on the evolving role of AI and potential changes to oversight and regulation. Members also welcomed newly appointed senior leaders from the British Columbia Financial Services Authority, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, the Newfoundland and Labrador securities regulator and the Nova Scotia Securities Commission, and heard a keynote address from John Parisella on the global political context.
