The Bank of Botswana announced that President Duma Gideon Boko has appointed Dr Agnes Tsholofelo Khunwana as Deputy Governor for a five-year term effective 1 June 2026. The appointment was made under the Bank of Botswana Act, as amended in 2022, which provides for the President to appoint the Deputy Governor in consultation with the Minister of Finance. Khunwana began her career at the central bank in 1993 in banking supervision, covering prudential supervision, regulatory compliance and financial stability, before leaving in 2000. She returns with more than 30 years of leadership experience across banking, financial services and other regulated sectors, including senior roles at First National Bank of Botswana, Debswana, Shell and Vivo Energy Botswana, Air Botswana and Ceiba Intercontinental Group, alongside board and committee positions covering governance, finance, risk and audit, including at the Non-Bank Financial Regulatory Authority.
