The South African Reserve Bank published an information notice setting out the US dollar equivalent of its official gold and foreign exchange reserves, Special Drawing Rights holdings and foreign currency deposits received from customers in the Statement of Assets and Liabilities as at 31 December 2024. Gross reserves stood at USD 65,459 million and the international liquidity position at USD 60,371 million, both lower than at 30 November 2024. Gold reserves were USD 10,546 million, SDR holdings USD 6,186 million and foreign exchange reserves USD 48,727 million. Foreign currency deposits received from customers (shown as a liability) were USD 5,620 million and the forward position was USD 532 million. The decline in gross reserves and the international liquidity position was mainly attributed to a lower US dollar gold price, valuation adjustments linked to the appreciation of the US dollar, and foreign exchange payments made on behalf of government.
