The Bank of the Lao PDR published an update on a meeting in which Deputy Governor Sulisak Thanouvong received China UnionPay President Guo Dayong and a delegation to discuss cooperation on developing Laos–China cross-border payments and modernising Laos’ payment systems. Discussions focused on advancing cross-border payment connectivity through UnionPay International and introducing modern technology into Laos’ domestic payment infrastructure to improve efficiency and accessibility. The two sides also discussed plans to exchange lessons on the oversight of cross-border retail payments, associated risk management, and developing standards related to merchant information. Both parties agreed to continue cooperation, including support for future payment-system development work in the Lao PDR.
