The Financial Action Task Force of Latin America (GAFILAT) held a high-level technical event jointly organised with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) alongside the FATF Plenary of Representatives to support stronger, more effective AML/CFT systems across the region. The sessions brought together authorities, the private sector and international bodies to exchange views on threats and on improving regional cooperation mechanisms. Discussion covered the risks associated with extortion as a facilitator of money laundering and its growing links to organised crime, including sharing practical experiences and investigative tools among GAFILAT members and the wider FATF network. Participants also examined public-private partnerships, information sharing between private-sector actors and the use of supervisory technologies to improve the quality of financial intelligence and strengthen risk-based supervision. A further session reviewed Canada’s experience in its fifth-round mutual evaluation, focusing on key changes from the previous evaluation, significant challenges and good practices.
