The National Bank of Georgia has warned that fraudsters are contacting citizens through WhatsApp and other communication channels while posing as bank representatives and unlawfully using its logo. The fraudsters offer purported help with loan obligations allegedly owed to the central bank or claim that victims’ banking data may have been accessed and a loan activation attempted. Victims are directed to access internet or mobile banking and disclose login credentials, including usernames and passwords, as well as other personal and financial information. The central bank warned that this could enable unauthorized account access and transactions, and advised citizens not to share credentials, enter information through suspicious links or conduct banking or card transactions at the request of unknown parties. Suspected incidents should be reported to law enforcement.
