The Central Bank of Brunei Darussalam announced the planned issuance of a New Family Banknotes Series covering five denominations (BND1, BND5, BND10, BND100 and BND500), scheduled to enter circulation in the first half of 2026. Existing banknotes will remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the new series. The new notes will incorporate upgraded security features to strengthen protection against counterfeiting, while retaining a recognisable design and national iconography, including portraits of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah on the BND1, BND5, BND10 and BND100, and Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien on the BND500. The series also replaces the term “Ringgit” with “Brunei Dollars” across all denominations to reflect Brunei Darussalam’s official unit of currency under the Currency Order, 2004, and introduces a DOMINO tactile feature of raised dots on the lower right corner of each note to help visually impaired users identify denominations.
