The Reserve Bank of Malawi, through the Registrar of Financial Institutions, published the list of financial institutions licensed and registered to operate in Malawi as at 30 June 2025. The notice also reiterates that customers should only transact with institutions appearing on the list and that licensed or registered entities must prominently display their licence or registration certificate on their premises. The register covers banks and discount houses, credit reference bureaus, development finance institutions and holding companies, capital market participants (including stock exchanges, brokers, collective investment schemes, investment advisers, portfolio managers, transfer secretaries and securities representatives), microfinance institutions (including microcredit agencies and deposit-taking and non-deposit-taking microfinance), finance companies, financial cooperatives (SACCOs), insurance companies and intermediaries (including brokers, bancassurance agents, general insurance agents, loss assessors/adjusters and claim settling agents), and pension entities (including pension service companies, corporate trustees, pension brokers and pension funds). The Registrar cautions the public against dealing with any entity not included on the published list and asks anyone who has transacted with an unlisted entity to report the details to the Registrar.
