In an interview published by the European Association of CCP Clearing Houses, Hellenic Capital Market Commission Chair Vassiliki Lazarakou outlined a 10-year outlook in which clearing becomes faster, more integrated and increasingly technology-driven while retaining its central role in risk management and market trust. She expects distributed ledger technology, tokenization, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure to drive the transformation. As financial instruments and transactions move onto distributed ledgers, the boundaries between trading, clearing and settlement could become less distinct, with clearing and settlement potentially moving toward near-real-time processes. Artificial intelligence could support continuous monitoring of positions, collateral, liquidity and counterparty risk, making risk management more predictive. Lazarakou cautioned that greater automation and interconnectedness would also create new risks and dependencies, increasing the need for robust governance, legal certainty, cyber resilience, common standards and clearly assigned responsibilities.
