The European Council adopted the final three legal acts needed for Bulgaria to introduce the euro on 1 January 2026, completing the accession process for Bulgaria to become the 21st member of the euro area. The package includes a Council decision on the adoption of the euro by Bulgaria, a Council regulation adding Bulgaria to the list of euro area member states, and a Council regulation setting the irrevocable conversion rate between the euro and the Bulgarian lev at BGN 1.95583 per EUR 1, corresponding to the lev’s current central rate in the Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II).
