The Thailand Office of Insurance Commission ran an outreach programme in Surat Thani under its “proactive insurance promotion to the regions” initiative, positioning insurance as a practical tool for managing tourism-related risks and urging tourist passenger boat operators to follow a “five boat safety checks” approach that includes maintaining appropriate passenger boat insurance. Engagements included meetings with the Surat Thani Chamber of Commerce and local business groups to coordinate cooperation and expand partner networks, alongside discussions with insurance agents, brokers and insurers on improving access to insurance and developing products aligned with the upper southern region’s needs, including broader coverage. The programme also convened a panel on risk management through insurance for safer tourism with representatives from five organisations, and cited Surat Thani’s 2024 tourism revenue of THB 92,154 million. The five checks cover vessel condition, operator readiness, valid vessel registration, sufficient working safety equipment for all passengers, and in-force passenger boat insurance throughout operations.
