The Central Bank of Bolivia published an update on the national payments system, reporting record growth in electronic payment use through May and an expansion of the ecosystem to accommodate new international participants, including the entry of Brazil’s PIX scheme. In the first five months of 2025, 605 million electronic payment transactions were processed, an 89% increase from 319 million in the same period of 2024. Electronic transfers (Órdenes Electrónicas de Fondos, OETF) made up 347 million transactions (57%), with QR payments representing 85% of OETF activity. By May, electronic transactions reached 77 per capita, up 87% from 41 per capita a year earlier, and the central bank projected 200 transactions per person by year-end versus 141 in 2024. The central bank attributed the expansion to its regulatory framework, including Board Resolution No. 111/2024, which strengthens interoperability, security and access requirements for electronic payment systems and sets guidelines for new payment schemes, immediate payments innovations and digital wallets. It also flagged further developments, including the continued roll-out of e-wallets and the forthcoming integration of payments using stable virtual assets such as USDT via payment channels authorised by the Central Bank of Bolivia.
