The National Bank of Moldova published a two-year update on its MIA Instant Payments system and confirmed the rollout of instant transfers between companies, extending the national real-time payments infrastructure beyond person-to-person and other use cases. Launched on 12 March 2024, MIA enables 24/7 real-time transfers in seconds through internet and mobile banking, including payments initiated using a phone number. The central bank reports nationwide uptake, with “every second” citizen who has at least one bank account using the service. Functionality has expanded in phases, adding payments to businesses (P2B) on 31 July 2024 and payments to public institutions (P2G) on 31 July 2025. From 2 March 2026, MIA also supports business-to-business (B2B) transfers in Moldovan lei with real-time settlement, intended for uses such as invoice payments and advances, at a fee of 0.7% of the transfer amount capped at MDL 40 per transaction. Looking ahead, the central bank identified interconnecting MIA with other regional instant payments systems as a priority, in the context of Moldova’s accession to the Single Euro Payments Area on 6 March 2025 and a technical interconnection with the European financial ecosystem on 6 October 2025.
