The Luxembourg Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) has issued a public warning about a significant increase in fraud attempts in which criminals usurp the CSSF’s identity. The scams involve contacting consumers while posing as CSSF representatives and requesting tax payments, refund or recovery fees, or other undue payments, including in cases targeting consumers who have invested in crypto-assets. The CSSF reiterated that it never contacts consumers to ask for tax or fee payments or any other type of payment, and it has no competence in tax matters. It also stated that it does not provide fund recovery services and does not manage financial instruments or crypto-asset accounts on behalf of third parties, and it published examples of ongoing fraud and scam attempts.
