The South African Reserve Bank published updated gross external debt statistics for South Africa, reporting an end-period stock of USD 179,244 million at 30 June 2025, up from USD 173,090 million at 31 March 2025. General government remained the largest component at USD 87,456 million (all long-term), dominated by debt securities of USD 79,170 million. Deposit-taking corporations (except the central bank) totalled USD 33,393 million, with USD 29,588 million classified as short-term on an original-maturity basis, including currency and deposits of USD 17,178 million and loans of USD 12,053 million. Direct investment stood at USD 24,292 million, public corporations at USD 17,628 million (excluding deposit-taking institutions), other sectors at USD 15,709 million, and the central bank at USD 766 million (short-term currency and deposits).
