The South African Reserve Bank published an updated International Reserves Template on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity, covering the short-term foreign currency assets and liabilities of the Bank and South Africa’s central government. The template reports official reserve assets of USD 69,161 million at end-July 2025. The release also sets out short-term foreign currency cash flows and exposures, including central government foreign currency outflows within one year of USD 4,026 million in principal and USD 1,732 million in interest, and net forward and futures positions showing USD 537 million of long positions and USD 2 million of short positions. Contingent liabilities within one year include other contingent liabilities of USD 1,559 million (central government: USD 1,175 million principal and USD 384 million interest), while memorandum items show USD 65,795 million of reserves in SDR-basket currencies (including gold) and USD 3,366 million in non-SDR basket currencies; the template also notes classification changes for reserve placements with fund managers from January 2013 and a broader reserves definition used up to December 2005.
