In a new blog post, Rwanda Capital Markets Authority Head of Technology and Digital Transformation Yvon Gilbert Nishimwe called for capital market participants to treat artificial intelligence as a governance issue, with human oversight, accountability and verified information underpinning its use. While AI can support market surveillance, analysis, investor education and faster services, inaccurate or fabricated outputs could mislead investors and undermine the integrity of disclosures and client communications. Issuers and intermediaries should independently check financial figures against audited statements and official disclosures, regulatory references against applicable law and authority publications, and trading information against Rwanda Stock Exchange records. Responsibility remains with the person approving or publishing the information, while client records, personal data and market sensitive information should not be entered into unapproved AI systems. Investors should also verify that providers are licensed by the authority and remain alert to AI generated impersonations, fraudulent websites and promises of guaranteed returns.
