The Italian Institute for Insurance Supervision (IVASS) issued a warning after reports of counterfeit surety policies purportedly issued by Fortegra Belgium Insurance Company, which has disowned the documents. Fortegra Belgium Insurance Company is a Belgian insurer supervised by the Nationale Bank van België and is authorised to operate in Italy under the freedom to provide services regime, including in non-life class 15 (surety). IVASS urged consumers to exercise caution when assessing insurance offers and to verify, before paying any premium, that quotations and contracts relate to duly authorised insurers and intermediaries by consulting IVASS’s online registers. These include lists of Italian and foreign insurers admitted to operate in Italy, the list of insurers authorised for surety business with instructions for electronic policy verification, the Single Register of Insurance Intermediaries (RUI) and the EU intermediary list, the list of supervised firms’ websites and properly registered intermediaries, and IVASS alerts on counterfeiting cases, unauthorised companies and non-compliant websites.
