HM Treasury has nominated Professor Jonathan Haskel CBE to become chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility. If confirmed, he would lead the body responsible for the United Kingdom's official economic and fiscal forecasts, monitoring performance against fiscal rules, and assessing risks to the public finances. Haskel is a professor of economics at Imperial College London whose work focuses on productivity and growth. His previous public roles include serving as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2018 to 2024, a non-executive director of the UK Statistics Authority from 2016 to 2022, and an external member of the Competition and Markets Authority's Reporting Panel from 2001 to 2009. The appointment remains subject to a Treasury Committee pre-appointment hearing and consent. HM Treasury said it expects Haskel could take up the post in time to oversee the OBR's forecast alongside the Budget later this year. Until then, Budget Responsibility Committee members Professor David Miles and Tom Josephs will continue to lead the OBR.
