The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative has outlined its finance sector priorities for the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and, with partners, called for governments and other actors to establish the policy, regulatory and market conditions needed to unlock investment through nature markets with high integrity. COP17 will conduct the first global review of progress under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework since its 2022 adoption, including implementation of the Cali Resource Mobilization Strategy, which targets at least USD 200 billion annually for biodiversity by 2030. The finance agenda will cover the operationalization of the UN Cali Fund’s mechanism for sharing benefits from digital sequence information, efforts to broaden the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund’s contributor base and the conversion of national biodiversity plans into investable pipelines for private finance. Finance and Biodiversity Day on Oct. 26 will assess financial system alignment with the framework and examine practical financing instruments, nature-related risk measurement, sector transitions and funding for underserved ecosystems.
