The Reserve Bank of Australia has launched a consultation on how RITS settlement services could support tokenised asset markets and tokenised private money while maintaining safety, efficiency and financial stability. The initiative advances the wholesale market work identified through Project Acacia and follows the Payments System Board’s recent endorsement of the consultation approach. Separately, the RBA and Treasury concluded that Australia’s retail payment system continues to serve households and businesses well, leaving no clear public interest case for a retail central bank digital currency. The assessment, which is consistent with their 2024 findings, draws on public research into Australians’ payment needs and views on a potential retail CBDC. The RBA has also published information on Project Acacia’s regulatory, industry and central bank workstreams for periodic updating.
