The Bermuda Registry General has introduced new eligibility restrictions for certified birth certificates under the Registration (Births and Deaths) Amendment Act 2026. The measure addresses identity theft and fraud risks identified through a review supported by the National Anti-Money Laundering Committee Working Group, given the use of birth certificates to access passports, driver’s licences, financial services and other official services. Certified copies may now be issued only to the person named, specified adult family members, an authorized person, a legal representative, a police officer with a court order or a public officer who requires the document for statutory duties. Public access to search the birth register remains unchanged, and people who are not eligible for a certified certificate may still obtain a plain copy of an entry. Fees have not increased, and the Registry General has issued guidance on the evidence required to establish identity and eligibility.
