The Portuguese Securities Commission (CMVM) held its Annual Conference 2025, bringing together financial sector leaders and stakeholders to discuss capital markets under the theme “A New Ambition for Capital Markets”, against the backdrop of ongoing work on the European Commission’s Savings and Investment Union (SIU) strategy. Opening remarks from CMVM Chair Luís Laginha de Sousa and Portugal’s Minister of State and Finance Joaquim Miranda Sarmento framed the role of capital markets in value creation and the need for coordination, integration and harmonisation across the SIU’s components, reflecting priorities set out in CMVM’s Strategic Plan 2025-2025. The agenda also included contributions from European Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union Maria Luís Albuquerque on the SIU’s core elements and direction for EU capital markets; a panel with Sonae CEO Cláudia Azevedo and European Central Bank Deputy Director-General John Fell on opportunities and challenges for Portugal; a global markets perspective from IOSCO Secretary-General Rodrigo Buenaventura, including the SIU’s potential role in addressing European market fragmentation; and a panel on the value of regulation amid pressure for regulatory simplification. The CMVM also awarded the José Luís Sapateiro Award 2024 to two research works, alongside its National Financial Innovation Contest recognition.
