The National Bank of Serbia published updated payment system statistics showing continued multi-year growth in the use of digital banking instruments, with mobile banking providing the largest contribution to the increase in payment volumes. The release links uptake to banks’ expanding digital service offerings and to the IPS NBS instant payments system, available 24/7/365 since October 2018. By end-2024, mobile banking users rose to 4.6 million, up 13.9% from end-2023 and 222.7% higher than end-2018, while electronic banking users reached 4.4 million, up 7.5% from end-2023 and 78.5% above end-2018. Mobile banking payments reached 109.3 million in 2024, up 25.7% year on year and 526.8% higher than 2018, while electronic banking payments totalled 142.5 million, down 1.8% from 2023 but up 13.8% versus 2018. Use of IPS-enabled features also increased, including over 20.8 million bills and invoices paid in 2024 by scanning the NBS IPS QR code, up 42.5% from 2023, and more than one million registered users of the Transfer service by end-2024, around three times end-2023, alongside a doubling in the number and value of mobile phone transfers versus 2023. Mobile banking payments rose 25.7% year on year to 109.3 million in 2024, while IPS-enabled features saw significant uptake, including a 42.5% increase in QR code bill payments.
