De Nederlandsche Bank has published statistics showing that inbound foreign direct investment in the Netherlands exceeded capital withdrawals in the first half of 2026. Foreign companies and investors invested EUR 72 billion, mainly from the United States and Germany. Outbound direct investment also increased, suggesting that much of the incoming capital was routed through the Netherlands to other countries rather than invested in the domestic economy. The reversal follows substantial declines in both inbound and outbound investment. Between 2018 and 2025, more than EUR 1.3 trillion of previous foreign investment was withdrawn from the Netherlands, with the United States and Luxembourg accounting for over 77% of those withdrawals. De Nederlandsche Bank linked the longer-term decline mainly to tax and other legislative changes that reduced incentives for multinationals to channel funds through Dutch corporate structures, including special purpose entities.
