The Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo, working with the European Union Office in Kosovo and experts from the Croatian National Bank deployed via the TAIEX programme, has advanced work to strengthen Kosovo’s legal and institutional framework for preventing and combating counterfeit currency, including through a dedicated workshop. The initiative builds on an inter-institutional group launched in November 2023 that brings together all relevant domestic authorities and has already implemented short- and medium-term measures. A key output is a dedicated draft legal and regulatory framework, prepared with Croatian National Bank expertise and aligned with European Union standards, which would establish national centres for analysing, researching and documenting counterfeit money and a shared information management system for all competent institutions, including a National Counterfeit Currency Centre. In parallel, the central bank is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora to advance ratification of the International Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting Currency (Geneva Convention of 20 April 1929) to strengthen international cooperation on the issue.
