The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has approved an updated competency standard for registered company auditors that gives greater weight to ethical behavior as a core element of professional competence. The standard takes effect on Oct. 1, 2026. Jointly issued by CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and the Institute of Public Accountants, the standard provides an alternative to time based experience requirements for applicants seeking registration as company auditors under the Corporations Act 2001. ASIC will update Regulatory Guide 180 on auditor registration to reflect the new approval instrument.
