The South African Reserve Bank published its template on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity, setting out the short-term foreign currency assets and liabilities of the South African Reserve Bank and South Africa’s central government as at end-January 2025. Official reserve assets were USD 65,876 million. The release also reports other foreign currency assets of USD 18 million and details predetermined short-term net drains within one year, including central government outflows of USD 3,060 million in principal and USD 1,841 million in interest, a net long position of USD 535 million in forwards and futures, and USD 74 million in other receivables. Other contingent liabilities within one year totalled USD 860 million, comprising central government principal of USD 418 million and interest of USD 442 million; the memorandum item on currency composition shows USD 62,739 million in SDR-basket currencies (including gold) and USD 3,137 million in currencies outside the SDR basket, and notes that from January 2013 foreign-currency reserves placed with fund managers are classified as securities rather than deposits.
