The European Central Bank published balance sheet figures showing total assets and liabilities of EUR 5.95 trillion, down EUR 21.4 billion from the previous week. The decline on the asset side was driven mainly by a EUR 17.9 billion fall in securities of euro area residents denominated in euro, including a EUR 18.4 billion decrease in securities held for monetary policy purposes, and a EUR 7.4 billion drop in other assets. Other asset movements partly offset that decline. Claims on euro area residents denominated in foreign currency rose by EUR 1.8 billion, claims on non-euro area residents denominated in euro increased by EUR 1.3 billion, and lending to euro area credit institutions related to monetary policy operations edged up by EUR 66 million. On the liabilities side, liabilities to euro area credit institutions related to monetary policy operations denominated in euro fell by EUR 27.1 billion to EUR 2.34 trillion, reflecting a EUR 22.6 billion decline in the deposit facility and a EUR 4.5 billion fall in current accounts, while liabilities to other euro area residents denominated in euro increased by EUR 16.2 billion and banknotes in circulation rose by EUR 609 million.
