Bermuda Monetary Authority issues public warning over unregulated investment seminar offering high returns

The invitations were sent by a UK-based capital introduction business on behalf of a UK-based client and, according to the information available to the authority, neither entity is regulated in Bermuda or the United Kingdom. The authority said its review of the accompanying fact sheet identified three main concerns. It was not specifically targeted at high-net worth or sophisticated investors, it lacked a clear disclaimer that it was not an offer to invest or an invitation to subscribe for an investment, and it referred to monthly payments described as both returns and interest based on the amount invested. The stated annual rates were 10% for a USD 10,000 investment, 12% for USD 20,000, 15% for USD 50,000 and $18% for USD 100,000. The Bermuda Monetary Authority also noted that no risk information was included in the fact sheet or invitation, and reminded the public that unusually high returns typically involve higher risk. The notice directs potential investors to verify whether a promoter is licensed or registered to conduct investment business in Bermuda by checking the authority's list of regulated entities. It also urges the public to review offering materials carefully and seek independent professional advice before committing funds.
