Lithuania's Ministry of Finance reported on Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekunas’ meeting in Luxembourg with Luxembourg Finance Minister Gilles Roth, covering the countries’ economic situation, efforts to increase defence funding, further support to Ukraine, and the role of the EU Savings and Investments Union (SIU) initiative in strengthening EU competitiveness. Discussions on the SIU focused on removing cross-border barriers to capital flows, increasing supervisory efficiency, reducing unnecessary administrative burdens and simplifying regulation, with Vaitiekunas stressing that any shift towards more centralised EU-level supervision should demonstrate clear added value that outweighs costs. The ministers also addressed the European Council’s mid-December agreement on a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine backed by the EU budget and the need to implement it as soon as possible, and Vaitiekunas sought Roth’s support for Lithuania’s nomination of Rimantas Šadžius as Vice-President and Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank.
