The Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market of the Republic of Kazakhstan has warned consumers about a fraud scheme in which scammers pose as postal service employees to obtain SMS verification codes and use them to access applications or other services. The scheme starts with an SMS about a letter or parcel delivery, followed by a messenger call from someone claiming to represent a postal company and asking the recipient to confirm the delivery or clarify the address by disclosing the code received by SMS. The agency said access to that code can be used to obtain personal data and steal money. It urged consumers never to share SMS confirmation codes, click links in messages from unknown senders, or disclose personal data, bank card numbers or CVV codes. It also advised people to verify information through official websites or mobile applications, be cautious about messenger calls from unknown numbers, contact law enforcement immediately if fraud indicators appear, and consider placing a voluntary ban on taking bank loans and microcredits through the eGov.kz portal or eGov Mobile to reduce the risk of fraudulent borrowing.
