Senate Finance Committee ranking Democrat Ron Wyden and Senate Banking Committee ranking Democrat Elizabeth Warren asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to explain why sanctioned Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov attended the U.S.-hosted G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in North Carolina on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The senators said his apparent invitation conflicted with U.S. policy on isolating Russia over its war in Ukraine. Their letter also asked how the administration complied with U.S. law requiring the Treasury secretary to take steps to exclude Russian officials from key international financial bodies, including the G20. Wyden and Warren requested a response by Oct. 10 and argued that Siluanov's participation undermined perceptions of U.S. sanctions enforcement.
