The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Major League Baseball (MLB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), described as the first such agreement between the CFTC and a professional sports league. The arrangement sets out a framework for discussion, cooperation and information exchange on issues of common interest, including safeguarding the integrity of professional baseball and related prediction markets. The MOU creates a mechanism to share information in a manner consistent with applicable law, intended to help both parties respond more quickly to incidents and anticipate emerging trends. CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig said the agreement aims to support the integrity of baseball-related prediction markets and strengthen protections for market participants against fraud, manipulation and other abuses.
