The Central Bank of Paraguay said payment alias functionality is now available to customers of cooperatives and electronic payment companies operating in the Paraguayan Payment System. The move extends a feature already offered by banks and finance companies to all mobile applications of the 62 cooperatives and two electronic payment companies that participate in the system through sponsoring entities, allowing users to send and receive transfers with an easy to remember identifier instead of a traditional account number. An alias can be linked to a national identity number, tax identification number, mobile phone number or email address. In June 2025, customers of cooperatives and electronic payment companies made more than 1 million transfers through the Paraguayan Payment System, and the central bank expects the new option to further speed those transactions. Since the alias system was introduced in September 2023, more than 3.2 million aliases have been registered in the Paraguayan Payment System, and about 21% of transfers through the Instant Payment System are now made using an alias. Customers need to check with their cooperative or electronic payment company for the steps required to activate an alias and begin using the feature.
