The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert to the public about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens related to The Bank of East Asia, Limited, following reports made to the HKMA and a related bank press release linked from the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing them to bank websites to conduct transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded links. Anyone who provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through, or in response to, the websites or login screens concerned was advised to contact the bank using the contact details in the bank’s press release and to report the matter to the Police.
