The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a scam alert drawing attention to a Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited notice about phishing instant messages and related scams involving fraudulent websites, internet banking login screens, phishing emails or other fraudulent approaches reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS. Individuals who have provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to the scams are advised to contact the relevant bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
