The Central Bank of Nicaragua published its Report on Payment Systems and Services in Nicaragua for the fourth quarter of 2025, reporting higher activity across the country’s payment systems in both value and volume versus the same period in 2024, alongside increased cash in circulation and wider use of payment instruments and payment infrastructure. Across SINPE, the regional SIPA platform and the Automated Clearing House operated by ACH de Nicaragua S.A. (UNIRED), 4.0 million transactions were processed for a total value of NIO 753,007.0 million, up 60.1% year on year in volume and 23.0% in value. SINPE accounted for NIO 581,144.4 million (+22.2%), with electronic funds transfers (TEF) representing 47.9% of SINPE value; UNIRED processed NIO 170,673.9 million across 3,257,527 operations (+26.0% in value and +78.9% in operations); and SIPA recorded NIO 1,188.7 million across 3,135 transfers (+17.9% in value and +45.0% in volume). Use of payment instruments totalled 77.8 million operations worth NIO 1.5 trillion (+20.6% in value and +15.3% in operations), with 3.6 million payment cards in circulation (+16.7%), 478,806 electronic money accounts (+18.6%) and 892,834 digital wallet users (+14.0%); debit cards were the most used instrument with 34.4 million transactions (+8.9%), and intrabank transfers represented 65.8% of total value. Cash in circulation reached NIO 69,389.1 million (+16.6%), of which 97.4% was regular-issue banknotes, while banks and fintech channels handled 92.1 million operations totalling NIO 1.7 trillion, including 60.6 million in-person operations worth NIO 272,509.5 million and 31.5 million remote operations worth NIO 1.5 trillion.
