National Bank of Bulgaria condemns attempted political action in its headquarters and reasserts central bank independence

The National Bank of Bulgaria published a public statement after members of the political party Vazrazhdane attempted to stage a political action inside the central bank’s building, noting that Bulgarian law and European Union law do not allow such activities on central bank premises. The central bank reaffirmed its independence, condemned any attempt at political interference in its work, and said political disputes should be conducted in the National Assembly. It called on Parliament and other competent state institutions to uphold, with the full strictness of the law, the right of the National Bank of Bulgaria and other independent institutions to carry out their statutory mandates without political pressure.
