The Central Bank of Latvia's Supervision Committee has granted NorthernTech SIA an electronic money institution operating licence, authorising it to issue electronic money, execute payment transactions and issue payment instruments. NorthernTech intends to serve online sellers by enabling them to accept customer payments in local currencies in specific countries and receive settlement in EUR, with e-money accepted by both legal entities and individuals. Latvia now has 11 licensed and one registered electronic money institutions, alongside five licensed payment institutions. In 2026, the central bank has issued two electronic money institution licences and one payment institution licence, after three companies received electronic money institution licences in 2025. Applicants are directed to the central bank's licensing guides and pre-licensing consultations, which set out documentation and review requirements and provide an initial assessment of compliance with the regulatory framework.
