The National Bank of Moldova released sectoral financial balance sheet data showing that the net financial worth of the national economy (financial assets minus liabilities) stood at -MDL 100.0 billion at 31 March 2025, down from -MDL 91.1 billion at 31 December 2024, leaving Moldova a net debtor to the “rest of the world” sector. The deterioration reflected liabilities rising by 1.1% since end-2024 versus a 0.2% increase in assets, while the net financial worth-to-GDP ratio fell to -30.4%. Households remained the sole net creditor sector but their net position declined 1.8% to MDL 227.8 billion as liabilities increased 7.6% to MDL 57.5 billion, and they contributed -4.6 percentage points to the overall change in net financial worth. Non-financial corporations recorded the largest net debtor position, widening to -MDL 285.5 billion, while general government narrowed its net debtor position to -MDL 24.1 billion and financial corporations to -MDL 18.2 billion. Total economy-wide debt (excluding equity and financial derivatives) reached MDL 629.3 billion (+0.8%), equivalent to 191.5% of GDP, with the financial sector accounting for MDL 273.0 billion. Loans received totalled MDL 250.1 billion (+1.6%), including external borrowing of MDL 123.3 billion (49.3% of total loans), of which 57.0% went to general government and 34.8% to non-financial corporations.
